PIA Boeing 777 Cabin Upgrade: Full-Flat Business Seats on 5 Jets

PIA Boeing 777 Cabin Upgrade: Flat Business Seats

PIA Boeing 777 cabin upgrade is trending because Pakistan International Airlines has signed a deal to modernise the cabins of five of its Boeing 777 wide-body jets, with an option for four more. The plan brings full-flat business class seats, refurbished economy seats and 60-watt in-seat power. German aviation services firm Aerotec Group and its unit aviationscouts announced the agreement on 15 October 2026, and Pakistani media reported PIA’s statement on 17 and 18 October. No start date, cost or seat supplier has been made public yet.

What is being upgraded on PIA’s Boeing 777s

The aviationscouts press release and PIA’s statement list the following work:

  • Business class: new full-flat seats, so passengers can sleep lying flat on long flights. The seat model, maker and number of seats per aircraft have not been announced.
  • Economy class: the current seats will be refurbished, not replaced with a new seat type.
  • Charging: new 60-watt in-seat power supply units across the cabin for phones, tablets and laptops.
  • Passenger service system: new equipment for the cabin service system, which normally covers items such as reading lights and crew call buttons.
  • Interior: new carpets, fresh branding and other selected cabin improvements.

The announcement does not mention Wi-Fi or a new in-flight entertainment system. There is also a small mismatch in wording: the scope of work talks about full-flat business class seats, while the PIA chief’s comment in the same release uses the term “executive economy” for the flat-bed seats. Some local reports, quoting unnamed sources, said the new business seats would take space from part of the economy cabin. PIA has not explained the final layout, so treat these details as unconfirmed until the first refitted aircraft is shown.

Who is doing the work

Aerotec Group describes itself as an aviation services group that supports airlines and aircraft lessors through technical, material and digital services. Its unit aviationscouts GmbH is based in Lichtenfels, Germany. Under the deal, the group will handle engineering support, certification, buying and shipping of materials, project management and technical coordination.

PIA chief executive Muhammad Amir Hayat said the project is part of the airline’s post-privatisation transformation and is meant to bring cabin comfort closer to international standards.

A 777 cabin refresh has been on PIA’s list for years. Back in March 2018, FlightGlobal reported that PIA had received a wide range of bids to refurbish the cabins of five Boeing 777s. The 2026 agreement comes after privatisation and was signed under PIA’s new consortium-led board and management.

How many aircraft and when

Five aircraft are confirmed and four more are on option, so up to nine jets could be refitted. PIA has not said which 777 versions are included. Its 777 fleet is made up of three versions: the 777-200ER, the 777-200LR and the 777-300ER. The 777 fleet has an average age of more than 20 years, and several jets have been parked, partly due to spare-parts shortages.

These figures come from fleet data cited by Air Data News in October 2026 and change as grounded jets return. For example, a 777 registered AP-BGZ, parked since May 2025, completed a test flight in April 2026 to rejoin the fleet.

On timing, the release only says the work will be phased in line with PIA’s fleet planning, maintenance schedule and operational needs. In practice, this means aircraft are likely to be refitted one by one during scheduled maintenance rather than all at once. No completion date or budget has been announced.

PIA in 2026: new owners and fleet plans

  • 23 December 2025: a consortium led by Arif Habib Corporation (with Fatima Fertilizer, City Schools and Lake City Holdings) won a 75% stake in PIA with a bid of Rs135 billion. A Lucky Cement-led group bid Rs134 billion.
  • 29 June 2026: management was handed to the new owners at the first closing. Rs80 billion of fresh equity went into the airline and Rs10 billion to the government. The consortium also gave notice that it intends to buy the remaining 25%.
  • 29 March 2026: PIA restarted direct London Heathrow flights from Islamabad after a six-year gap.
  • 9 October 2026: PIA signed an ACMI (wet-lease) deal with Norse Atlantic Airways for two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners on Pakistan–UK routes, expected from November 2026.
  • Mid-October 2026: SalamAir chief Adrian Hamilton-Manns was nominated as PIA’s next CEO. Reports say he is expected to take charge by the end of October once security and other clearances are complete.

What it means for passengers

  • Business class travellers on long routes such as the UK, Canada and Saudi Arabia should get flat beds once refitted 777s start flying. PIA has not said which routes will get them first.
  • Economy passengers get refreshed seats and seat power, which helps on long journeys to the UK, Europe or Canada.
  • It will not happen overnight. Because the work is phased, many flights will keep using the older cabins for some time. Check the seat map when you book.
  • No fare change linked to the upgrade has been announced.
  • Schedules can shift while aircraft rotate through maintenance, so check your flight status before leaving for the airport.
