What a mobile wallet is in Pakistan

A mobile wallet is a bank account that runs on your phone number instead of a branch. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) calls this branchless banking: you open the account remotely and put in or take out cash at agent shops.

You sign up with your CNIC (the 13-digit number on your national identity card) and protect the account with a PIN. Your balance is held by a licensed bank, not by the shopkeeper or the mobile company.

Who runs Easypaisa and JazzCash

Easypaisa is now a bank in its own right. In January 2025 the SBP announced that Easypaisa Bank Limited, formerly Telenor Microfinance Bank Limited, had received Pakistan’s first digital retail bank licence.

JazzCash is a branchless banking service. Its account terms and schedule of charges are issued by Mobilink Microfinance Bank Limited, the bank behind the brand. The service started in 2012 as MobiCash and became JazzCash in 2016.

Account levels and what they allow

SBP’s Branchless Banking Regulations describe simplified account levels. Level 0 is a basic account opened after your CNIC is checked with NADRA (the national identity database), and it has low limits. Level 1 needs biometric verification, which is a fingerprint check against NADRA, and allows more.

JazzCash publishes these limits in its account terms (as of October 2026):

LevelDailyMonthlyMaximum balance
Level 0Rs 25,000Rs 50,000Rs 200,000
Level 1Rs 100,000Rs 300,000Rs 1,000,000

Easypaisa shows your own level and limits in the app: tap your profile picture, then Account Level. Its website says an upgrade can raise limits to as much as Rs 10 lakh (as of October 2026). JazzCash also lists higher account types, such as the Asaan Digital Account, for people who need more room.

Other digital wallets in Pakistan

  • SadaPay and NayaPay: these are electronic money institutions, meaning non-bank companies licensed by the SBP. The SBP’s list, updated in November 2025, shows both licensed for commercial operations with consumer wallets.
  • UPaisa: the branchless banking service of U Microfinance Bank, a PTCL subsidiary, offered together with Ufone.
  • Raast: not a wallet. It is the SBP’s own instant payment system, which links your account to your mobile number as a Raast ID. The SBP says there are no charges on Raast services, and both Easypaisa and JazzCash have a Raast option.

How to choose the best mobile wallet in Pakistan for your needs

Neither service is better for everyone. Match the wallet to how you will use it.

  • Your SIM: a Telenor SIM gives you Easypaisa on *786# and the 3737 short code. A Jazz SIM gives you JazzCash on *786# and 4444. On other networks you mainly use the app.
  • No smartphone: the USSD menu matters most, so the wallet that matches your SIM is usually simpler.
  • Cash in and out: check which agent shops are close to your home or work. Easypaisa has a Store Locator in its app and JazzCash has an agent locator on its website.
  • Cards: Easypaisa says its debit card works only inside Pakistan. JazzCash offers Mastercard cards, including a virtual one. Check each card’s fee first.
  • Who you pay: pick the wallet your family, employer or customers already use, although Raast can move money between the two.
  • Charges: each company posts a schedule of charges on its website. Compare the services you use most, such as cash withdrawal or bank transfers.

You can hold one account with each service, because the one-account rule applies per provider. More guides are on our mobile wallets page.

Problems and fixes

  • Forgot your PIN or MPIN: Easypaisa has a Forgot PIN option in its app. For a JazzCash MPIN, call the helpline from your registered number if you cannot reset it in the app.
  • Money sent to the wrong number: call the helpline at once with the transaction ID. JazzCash’s terms say a completed transfer cannot be reversed and your claim is against the receiver, so speed matters. Easypaisa lets you reverse a CNIC transfer in the app.
  • Limit exceeded: your account level is too low for the amount. Upgrade it in the app.
  • Phone lost: ask your mobile operator to block the SIM and call the wallet helpline from another phone to block the account.
  • Complaint not solved: JazzCash’s contact page points to the SBP’s Sunwai complaint portal as the next step.

Safety tips for any mobile wallet

Never share your PIN, MPIN or OTP with anyone. Easypaisa and JazzCash do not ask for them on calls, SMS or WhatsApp, and JazzCash states this on its contact page.

Download apps only from the official stores, check the fee on the review screen before you confirm, and count your cash and read the SMS before leaving an agent shop. If you pay utility bills from your wallet, confirm the amount first with our online bill check guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, Easypaisa or JazzCash?

Neither wins on every point. Easypaisa tends to suit Telenor users and JazzCash suits Jazz users, and after that it depends on nearby agents, cards and the fees for the services you use.

Can I use Easypaisa on a Jazz SIM, or JazzCash on a Telenor SIM?

Yes. Both companies say an account can be opened on any mobile network, and the app is the main route when your SIM belongs to another operator.

Can I send money from Easypaisa to JazzCash?

Yes. Use the Raast or other-wallet transfer option in the sending app and check any fee shown before you confirm.

Is my money safe in a mobile wallet?

Both services are regulated by the State Bank of Pakistan. Most losses happen when a customer shares a PIN or OTP with a fraudster, so keep those private.

Do I need a biometric check?

Under SBP rules a basic account has low limits, and a fingerprint check with NADRA is needed for a higher level. Agents also verify account holders biometrically for cash deposits and withdrawals.
