Between 1 and 9 October, petrol climbed by Rs11.56 a litre. Since the weekend of 10 October the trend has reversed, and petrol is now Rs1.10 cheaper than it was on 1 October. Diesel has moved less, but it is Rs3.39 lower than on 1 October.

Are petrol prices revised weekly or fortnightly now?

Neither. For years, Pakistan reviewed fuel prices every fortnight. After the US-Iran conflict began in late February 2026, the government moved to weekly reviews from early March. Then, on 17 July 2026, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced a shift to daily pricing, and the first daily revision took effect on 21 July.

Under this system, OGRA works out the new ex-depot prices each day from international market trends, and the Petroleum Division issues the notification, usually in the evening, for the next day. Friday’s notification covers the whole weekend. The current rates run until Monday 19 October, so the next change is expected to be announced on Monday evening for Tuesday 20 October.

What the petrol cut means for your fuel bill

Here is a simple comparison of what common fill-ups cost at today’s rate, at the 16 October rate and at the 9 October high. The litre amounts are only examples; check your own vehicle’s tank size.

Why petrol prices fell

The Petroleum Division said the latest revision followed global developments, including changes in Platts rates, premiums and incidental charges. Business Recorder reported these key figures behind the 17 October cut:

  • The seven-day average international price of petrol fell to $124.39 a barrel from $127.24.
  • The import cost of petrol fell to Rs275.56 a litre from Rs279.45.
  • The international diesel price was almost flat ($108.54 against $108.53 a barrel), so the HSD rate was left unchanged.
  • The petroleum levy (Rs80 a litre) and the climate support levy (Rs5 a litre) were not changed, and neither were dealer and oil company margins.

Global oil prices remain high. Brent crude was trading at around $106 a barrel this week, with markets still worried about supplies from the Middle East. Pakistan imports most of its petroleum, so any change in world prices reaches local pumps quickly. Even after the recent cuts, petrol is far below its 2026 peak of Rs458.41 per litre, which came into effect on 3 April.

Diesel is still costlier than petrol

At Rs396.96 per litre, high-speed diesel now costs Rs10.66 more than petrol. Diesel runs most trucks, buses and tractors, so its price feeds into transport fares and the cost of moving goods. Diesel fell by about Rs5.40 between 1 and 8 October, but it has risen by about Rs2 since then and was not reduced in the latest revision.
