ODI record: Pakistan still lead overall
Pakistan’s 73-58 lead in ODIs was built mainly in the 1980s and 1990s, when the teams met often in Sharjah and in bilateral series. India have had the better of recent years, including a 228-run win in the 2023 Asia Cup in Colombo, the biggest margin in this rivalry. Some famous ODI performances include Saeed Anwar’s 194 in Chennai in 1997 and Aaqib Javed’s 7 for 37 in Sharjah in 1991.
Pakistan’s best ICC moment against India came in the 2017 Champions Trophy final at The Oval, which Pakistan won by 180 runs. In ODI World Cups, however, India have won all eight meetings, from 1992 to 2023.
T20I record: India well ahead
The first T20I between the sides, at the 2007 World T20 in Durban, was tied and India won the bowl-out; India also won the final of that tournament. Pakistan’s three T20I wins came in Bengaluru in December 2012, at the 2021 T20 World Cup in Dubai, where they won by 10 wickets, and at the 2022 Asia Cup in Dubai. India have won every T20I since then, including three matches at the 2025 Asia Cup, the 2026 T20 World Cup game in Colombo and the 2026 Asian Games final.
Test record: mostly draws
The teams have played 59 Tests, and 38 of them were drawn. Pakistan lead 12-9. The last Test was played in Bengaluru in December 2007, and there has been no Test between them since. Two individual landmarks from this rivalry stand out: Anil Kumble took all 10 wickets for 74 runs in Delhi in 1999, and Virender Sehwag scored 309 in Multan in 2004.
