FBR Tax Return Last Date 2026: Extended Deadline, Penalty and How to File
The FBR tax return last date 2026 is now Thursday 15 October 2026. The original due date for tax year 2026 returns was 30 September 2026, but the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) extended it by 15 days through Circular No. 3 of 2026-27, issued on 30 September 2026 under section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001.
The extension covers everyone who had to file a return for tax year 2026 by 30 September, which includes salaried people and other individuals. As of 12 October 2026, no further extension has been announced, so you have only a few days left to file on IRIS without facing a penalty and losing your place on the Active Taxpayers List (ATL).

FBR tax return last date 2026: what happened
In the last days of September, a fake circular claiming an extension spread on social media. FBR said publicly that the circular was fake and that it had issued no such document. Trade bodies and tax bar associations then asked for more time, citing slowdowns on the IRIS portal near the deadline.
On Wednesday 30 September 2026, FBR issued the genuine Circular No. 3 of 2026-27 and moved the last date to 15 October 2026. It said the extension was given on the requests of trade bodies and tax bars. The lesson is simple: only trust deadline news that appears on the FBR website or its official social media accounts.
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| Late September 2026 | FBR declares a viral extension circular fake |
| 30 September 2026 | Original due date; FBR issues Circular No. 3 of 2026-27 |
| 30 September 2026 (midnight) | About 5.77 million returns received, up 45 percent on last year, as reported by Dawn |
| 15 October 2026 | Extended last date for tax year 2026 returns |
Who must file a return for tax year 2026
The general rule under section 114 of the Income Tax Ordinance is that you must file if your taxable income is above the taxable limit, if you are a company or association of persons, or if FBR has served you a notice to file. Many people also file voluntarily so they stay on the ATL and pay lower withholding tax on banking, property and vehicle deals.
Individuals filing a return must also submit a wealth statement that lists assets and liabilities as on 30 June 2026. If you are not sure whether you must file, check the Income Tax Basics section on the FBR website or call the FBR helpline.
Penalty for filing after the last date
Filing after 15 October 2026 can cost you in three ways: a penalty under section 182, a surcharge to get back on the ATL, and higher withholding tax until your name returns to the list. The table below sums up the main charges as given in the FBR text of section 182.
| Default | Penalty under section 182 |
|---|---|
| Return not filed by the due date | 0.1 percent of tax payable for each day of default, up to 50 percent of tax payable |
| Minimum penalty (general) | Rs40,000, also applies when no tax is payable |
| Minimum penalty (salaried) | Rs5,000 if at least 75 percent of income is salary and salary income is under Rs5 million |
| Wealth statement not filed | 0.1 percent of taxable income per week or Rs100,000, whichever is higher |
Under the law, a penalty is imposed through a written order after the taxpayer is given a chance to be heard, although a taxpayer who admits the default can pay it voluntarily.
ATL status and the late filing surcharge
If you file within the due date, your name is added to the Active Taxpayers List without any extra payment. If you file late, you must pay a surcharge before you are included. According to tax experts quoted by ProPakistani, the 2026 budget raised this surcharge for individuals from Rs1,000 to Rs25,000.
On 6 October 2026 FBR published draft rules that would let individuals who file late join the ATL without the surcharge, if they give an undertaking on IRIS not to buy any property for six months. These rules were only proposed for public feedback, so do not rely on them until FBR confirms the final version.
To check your status, send ATL (space) your 13-digit CNIC to 9966, or use the ATL status check on the FBR e-services portal. Companies and associations of persons send ATL (space) their 7-digit NTN to the same number.

Common problems near the deadline
- IRIS is slow or will not load: traffic peaks in the last few days. Try early in the morning or late at night and do not leave filing to 15 October.
- Forgot password or PIN: use the forgot password option on the IRIS login page. The reset code goes to the mobile number and email you registered with.
- Mobile number not in your name: IRIS registration needs a number registered on your own CNIC. You can check this through our SIM check guide.
- Wealth statement does not reconcile: the unreconciled amount must be close to zero. Recheck personal expenses, cash at hand and bank balances.
- Name not on the ATL after filing: the list is updated after processing. If your status does not change, contact the FBR helpline with your acknowledgement number.
